Huerta Academia Tica Spanish School

San Rafael de Vázquez de Coronado

We're a Costa Rican Spanish School and we started our small vegetable garden (40 sq. m) in 2020, like many! A few years later, we're still growing our veggies for the school community and doing no dig tropical trials with our own compost from our 5000 sq. m garden, trying to do less work and at low cost.

The project is expanding with a food forest for our students and the school community, plus reforestation of native species for the insects, birds and other fauna around us.

We have a mild climate being in the Central Valley mountains of Costa Rica, about 1400 m altitude. We can grow a wide variety of crops like native fruits such as cas, bananas, coffee and güizaros but also veggie staples such as tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, lettuce, kales, herbs, corn, chilies, etc.
