Salad in cold frame
On Gardener's Question Time this week, one of the panel suggested covering winter salads in cold frames with newspaper during cold weather. He said it improved the flavour.
Has anyone tried this, or something similar? With the weather becoming colder, I was wondering if it was worth trying or is it not necessary?
I can't imagine how or why it would improve the flavour...!

The paper would keep some frost off but any improvement in flavour sounds doubtful to me unless it was from blanching of endive and chicory leaves to reduce their bitterness. The paper could also harbour slugs.
