No dig is 16' enough
as i am disabled i have deep beds i used link- a -board stacked 3 high and i have a depth of about 16 in'. Underneath that is clay. i have put in some green wast compost with horse manure, this mixed in to the top layer of soil, i plan to put a layer of green wast compost and the horse pooh on top and let it alone to do its own thing as i would with no dig, will the 16 in' be enough to grow roots.? thank you Michael
Ps i take armature gardening, and have learned a lot from that and your piece.

Hi Michael,
Your beds sound productive and I am sure that 16 inches is plenty of depth, even for parsnips. I have grown lovely 6 inch carrots in 6 inches of compost on top of rotting grass. Also as well as the visible, edible large part of carrot, they send finer roots down much further into whatever the lower soil is, in your case, the clay (probably similar to here). I am always amazed when I manage to extract the lower reaches of my parsnip roots and see the yellow clay they have burrowed through.
I wonder whether your linkabord planks are strong enough to take the weight of the beds' ingredients or do they need an extra support stake into the ground, along the sides?
thank you for your advise and encouragement. the link a bord have links across to each side so no problem there. thank you Michael
